KENET is a National Research and Education Network that promotes the use of ICT in Teaching, Learning and Research in Higher Education Institutions in Kenya. KENET aims to interconnect all the Universities, Tertiary and Research Institutions in Kenya by setting up a cost effective and sustainable private network with high speed access to the global Internet. KENET also facilitates electronic communication among students and faculties in member institutions, share learning and teaching resources by collaboration in Research and Development of Educational content. The network consists of all public and private universities and colleges. To date, KENET boasts of 52 active members.
The Kenya ICT Board, under the KTCI project, is working with KENET to ensure that all KENET member institutions are interlinked by a fast and reliable network. So far, 64 KENET member institutions have been provided with affordable and efficient bandwidth.
Seven Points of Presence (POPs) have also been deployed at the United States International University, Moi University, Mombasa Polytechnic, Kenyatta University, Maseno University, Mombasa Polytechnic, Egerton University and Kenya Methodist University. These POPs provide direct connectivity to member institutions. The PoPs also act as the back-up sites for Universities in the region they serve.
With the growth of the KENET network, network management will be of utmost importance in order to use the resources effectively. To this end, the KICTB will fund the development of an ultra modern network operation centre (NOC). The NOC will among other things enable KENET to manage the expanded network and offer its members more efficient and effective services.
The NOC will also offer data centre services including hosting, co-location and disaster recovery services for KENET members. This project will be completed by the end of 2010.
